What I’m going to talk about is something that you can do, not only from Singapore but anywhere in the world – provided of course you have a laptop and an Internet connection.

Sure, there are many in Singapore selling stuff through social media platforms like Instagram. Most of these people who ARE selling through Instagram have either their own products or some form of physical products that they outsource elsewhere.

That makes sense, as to market in Instagram, you need to be selling something that’s visually-appealing.

But what if you don’t have your own products or don’t want to deal with delivery/shipping to meet your customers’ needs?

Well, the answer lies in affiliate marketing.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing simply means selling other people’s products without having or creating any products of your own.

There are several stages to this, beginning with the kind of products you choose to sell. There are many affiliate networks out there and just because you are in Singapore, doesn’t mean you can’t promote and market products from the US or any part of the world.

What would help you choose products to sell is to identify the niche market you want to be in. Your target audience then depends on the kind of products you choose to sell.

What is a Niche?

A niche is plainly speaking a focused market. Rather than try to sell something to a big group of people, you try to promote to a segmented, smaller group.

In choosing a niche, you can certainly follow your interest but you have to also combine this with the marketability of products in that niche.

Let’s look at an example. There are many people with cats as pets, these days. If you are a cat owner, you might want to choose “cat accessories” as your niche.

The next thing to do is to find an affiliate network that offers such products.

One of the most important thing about being successful in affiliate marketing is to offer products in as niche a market as possible.

What is an Affiliate Network ?

An affiliate network is a company (like Amazon) that provides products for you to market and get commissions from.

You can look up companies that offer affiliate programs in your niche. Taking the example of the “cat accessories”, go to a search engine like Google and look up “cat accessories affiliate program”.

You would get something like this :

Affiliate networks are usually free to join. However, some would not give immediate approval and will only give the go-ahead based on your experience as a marketer.

This is the reason why Amazon and Clickbank are good places to start, especially if you have never done affiliate marketing before.

In looking up an affiliate network, you might want to choose based on :

1. Range of products
2. The commissions provided

Amazon offers lower commissions but the upside is its reputation as one of the largest online retailers and range of physical products. Clickbank offers bigger commissions but the products offered are purely digital.

How to Market Your Affiliate Products?

Start With a Website

There are many different ways to market your affiliate products. But here I suggest that you begin with a website.

Why?

A website allows you to build your identity and it’s where the marketing emanates from.

Taking the cat accessories niche, having a website will not only allow you to talk about your experience as a cat owner but also recommend cat accessories to your audience. You might not get people to buy from your website immediately but over time, your audience will trust you enough to buy from you (based on your recommendation and genuity as a pet owner).

These days, creating a website is easy with WordPress or Joomla. You can create websites for free but of course ‘free’ comes with limitations.

Some platforms offer drag-and-drop feature that doesn’t require you to know those technical jargons or programming language.

Whichever you choose, you need to get the following before you can create a website :

1. A domain name – for e.g. greatcataccessories.com – It is recommended that you get .com, .net or .org domain names
2. Hosting – this is where your website resides

Of all the different stages in starting an affiliate marketing business, personally I feel this is the most challenging.

Anybody can start a website, but the challenge is getting traffic. There are many ways you can get traffic and it is easy to fall prey to trying all the different methods without focusing on the ones that would work best for you.

I suggest that you focus on one or two methods that you are most comfortable with and work at those before you move on to others.
